Genetic and CODIS Identity Analyses

CBI is accredited as a DNA Data Base laboratory for analysis of samples for entry into the FBI Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) database. In December 1997, the FBI identified thirteen (13) loci that will be examined for each sample entered into the CODIS database. These 13 loci provide an extremely high level of confidence for the sample identification. Most states are planning to submit samples from individuals passing through the local criminal justice system to this data base. CBI has provided a commercial, high throughput, and low cost source for this service.

  • Perkin-Elmer/Applied BioSystems Division 377 Prism and the AmpFlSTR™ series of kits

Low cost, high throughput: CBI maintains a battery of PE/ABD 377 Prism Fragment analysis systems, each capable of high throughput processing of samples amplified with the AmpFlSTR Profiler™ series of allele amplification kits. All thirteen loci required for the CODIS database are now available for the PE/ABD system. Each instrument can process over 250 samples per day, or over 75,000 samples per year. Our current capacity is over 500,000 samples per year. The system is reliable, easily maintained and accredited.

  • The Hitachi FM BIO II Scanner with the Promega PowerPlex™ amplification kits

CBI is also validated on this system for compatibility with those laboratories that have long term experience with it. Although thirteen CODIS loci are not yet available, Promega will have them available soon. This system is also very reliable, easily maintained and accredited.

  • Accreditations

CBI has been inspected and accredited by the National Forensic Science Technology Center, St. Petersburg, and Florida. Inspections are performed on a bi-annual basis, the next being due in 2000. CBI is fully compliant with all requirements for DNA Database laboratories. CBI also conforms to CLIA and GLP, Good Laboratory Practices. All requirements of Chain of Custody, sample security, laboratory security and documentation, and contamination control are observed. All validation and proficiency testing is performed as required.

  • Licensure

CBI has executed license agreements with Perkin-Elmer, Inc., and Roche Molecular Systems, Inc., to perform Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) based tests in a commercial setting.
