BSL-3 Facility

BSL-3 Facility

Scientists use biosafety labs (BSL) to study contagious materials safely and effectively. CBI’s BSL-3 labs are used to study agents that can be transmitted through the air and cause potentially lethal infection. The laboratory has special engineering and design features which include controlled access and specialized ventilation systems for negative airflow into laboratory. CBI laboratory personnel have specific training in handling pathogenic and potentially lethal agents, and are supervised by scientists who are experienced in working with these agents.

All procedures involving the manipulation of infectious materials are conducted within Class II biological safety cabinets (BSC) or other physical containment devices, and by personnel wearing appropriate personal protective clothing and equipment.

CBI operates two BSL-3 laboratories for work with viral and bacterial select agent pathogens. This facility is licensed to receive and work with select agents as defined by the CDC. Each lab is ~500 square ft and contains all the proper equipment to grow, isolate and manipulate restricted organisms in a safe manner. To help with the preparation prior to entry, the BSL-3 laboratories are connected to a bio-vestibule (190 sq ft) which allows for physical separation from corridors and has self-closing, double-doors.

CBI’s BSL-3 laboratories, databases and other resources help scientists conduct safe and effective biodefense research.
