In rna viruses, the rna directs two processesprotein synthesis (production of the virus's protein coat) and replication (the process by which rna copies itself). In cellular organisms, another type of genetic material, called deoxyribonucleic acid (dna), carries the information that determines protein structure. But dna cannot act alone and relies upon rna to transfer this crucial information during protein synthesis (production of the proteins needed by the cell for its activities and development).

Heinrich matthaei synthesized repeated nucleotide sequences that led to the production of repeated single amino acids. A hurdle to the development of biotechnology has been the concern that it may prove difficult to protect the commercial rights to the products of genetic manipulation. A sugar maple, however, which leads a fixed existence and has ample storage space in its roots, relies almost entirely on carbohydrates in the form of sucrose. Austrian monk gregor mendel first identified these patterns in the 1860s (see mendels laws). With their recombinant dna, bacteria became factories for turning out human proteins, such as the hormone insulin or antibodies that fight disease. When the dna on the chip pairs with the fluorescent dna, it develops a fluorescent glow that can be viewed with a microscope and interpreted by a computer. These specifically adapted defenses are known as adaptive, or specific, immunity.
